There is an ancient African word - ‘Ubuntu’, it means, “I am, because we are”. It is a way of life, a way of looking at the world, a way of getting involved and participating for the greater good of others as well as ourselves.
The late, great Nelson Mandela tells of how, in his childhood, if a traveller stopped in his village, they wouldn’t have to ask for food or water. Once a traveller stopped, the people would rally around and give them food and care spontaneously. They understood the meaning of Ubuntu and how it personifies, respect, helpfulness, care, empowerment, sharing, community and much more.
At Oasis we recognise the need for Ubuntu. We recognise that life is not simply about doing for people or doing to people, it is about getting involved in one another’s lives for the greater good.
If you feel you would like to get involved with Oasis in some way then we would love to hear from you.
